Former U.S. president Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to allegations of election interference in the state of Georgia.[0] The charges accuse Trump of illegally attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss in the southern state. Trump waived his right to an arraignment, which was initially scheduled for September 6th in Fulton County.[1] His lawyers also requested that his case be severed from some of his co-defendants who have sought a speedy trial.[2] The trial is set to be televised and live-streamed, marking the first time cameras will be present for one of the four criminal indictments against Trump.[3] Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had requested an October 23rd trial start date for all 19 defendants, including Trump.[4] However, his lawyers argued that they would not have sufficient time to prepare for that trial date.[4] The pre-trial phase of the case has begun, but no trial date has been set yet.[5] The proceedings will be broadcast on a YouTube stream operated by the court, allowing for transparency and public access.[6] Trump surrendered to the Fulton County jail last week and was released on a $200,000 bond.[7] The charges against Trump include racketeering and attempts to overturn the state's election results. The New York Attorney General's office has also accused Trump of fraudulently inflating his net worth by as much as $2.2 billion.[8] Overall, the trial in Georgia is a significant development in the legal battles surrounding Trump's actions during and after the 2020 election.
